Very Rare Antique 1780s Lead St Nicholas Santa Christmas Tree Decoration E137
Rare 1780′s Lead St Nicholas/Santa Claus Christmas Tree Decoration. An exceptionally rare late 16th Century Christmas tree decoration. Made of lead small decorations of this type were traditionally hung on the Christmas tree (or branches brought into the home) between Christmas and New Years Eve. The shapes and figures came in many forms and were often simple charms offering luck or good wishes, or could be associated with work or leisure activities. In a system of divination that dates back to the medieval period the pieces would be removed on New Years Eve and melted in a spoon, the hot lead being allowed to drip into a bowl of cold water where ones fortune was told by the form and imagined pictures of the then newly cooled lead. As a result very few of these ornaments survive today. Measuring roughly 2.5cm high by 1.2cm wide it remains in an excellent vintage condition with very minor wear. This piece has come from my own personal collection and was bought in Germany where it most likely originated from. Vintage decorations make a wonderful gift and last a lifetime, bringing memories year after year. Finding a decoration from your own childhood and long since forgotten, can bring back some of the happiest memories from very early childhood.
