Antique Black Forest Rare Carved Krampus Austrian German Christmas Folklore

A remarkable, rare and early antique Black Forest carving of the well known Krampus from Austro-Bavarian Alpine folklore. Dating to the mid 19th Century this fantastic Krampus has been skillfully and beautifully carved, and his detailing is quite incredible. He has a few minor losses. The tips of his horns and ears are absent. Each of his clawed hands has been carved to originally hold his no longer present Rute switch of birch sticks and his trident – his right hand has been re-attached at the cuff. Minor scuffing to the tip of his nose and a tiny nibble to the end of his beard. His basket has a small nibble to the rim, and, independent from the rest of the figure, is attached by means of a small internal peg and has at a later date been secured at the base with some clear glue. Although it is very difficult to tell, I think he may have also originally had a tongue. If desired all of the above could be easily restored, however, these small imperfections do not detract from his magnificent presence! Carved from one piece of wood, Krampus stands upon a little knoll, surrounded by seven holes, perfect for housing the silver and gold birch switches given out on Krampusnacht – silver for the naughty children and gold for the good! Krampus measures an impressive 40cms in height or 15 3/4 inches. An absolutely outstanding example of Black Forest carving and the most fabulous antique Christmas decoration that I have ever seen! Please see photos as part of his condition report. Thanks for looking, please message me with any questions you may have. Will be sent tracked and insured.
